A Quiet Place

Does the voice inside your head race at a million miles per hour?

A few years ago, I was surprised to find out that not everybody has an inner monologue. In fact, only 50% of the world's population experiences having an inner voice. An inner monologue or inner voice is the voice that speaks to you inside your head. It talks to you about issues, lists you must achieve, replays conversations in your mind, and repeats songs, movies, and podcasts. Most people develop their inner voice when they are children, mostly through play. If you have an internal dialogue, it can be your biggest cheerleader or your worst nightmare.

For me, my inner voice used to be my worst nightmare. It wouldn't stop; I would constantly be narrating something in my head. It disrupted my focus and fed my anxiety. I didn't realise at the time, but my busy brain was activating my 'fight or flight' response, causing anxiety. My manic mind was affecting my nervous system, increasing my heart rate, breath rate, shutting down my digestive system, putting pressure on my organs, affecting my hormones, and creating tension in my muscles. I suffered from severe back pain, stomach pains and eventually, the stress made me ill.

I reached a point where I no longer wanted to feel that way. I no longer wanted my mind to control my lifestyle and happiness. I knew there was another way. My golden ticket into quieting my mind is breathwork and reiki. My inner monologue has become my cheerleader, only making an appearance when it's important. I don't have a stream of chaotic or irrational thoughts running through my head, making me stressed and causing anxiety.

What is Breathwork? It is an umbrella term for different breathing techniques. It can be anything from invigorating to calming. It brings you into the present moment. When you spend time focusing your attention on your breath, your mind finds it harder to notice unwanted chatter. There is also an emotional release. When you express that emotion and give it space, your brain naturally quiets the chatter. Finally, breathwork balances your nervous system. It activates important nerves in your body, sending messages to your brain to calm down. What is Reiki and how did that help? Usui Reiki is an energy balancing healing modality. It focuses on intuitively guided hand placements and is completely receiver driven. This means the person receiving the Reiki will get exactly what they need. If they have a busy mind, the reiki will quieten it. If they feel tired, reiki will help them to feel energised. It’s beautifully powerful and incredibly calming. Whilst receiving Reiki you will enter into a deep meditative state which is incredibly freeing for anyone with a busy mind.

The most important thing to remember about breathwork and reiki is that it needs to be done consistently to have the desired effects. This can be anything from a shorter practice each day to one long journey a week. Having your mind as your cheerleader may not happen instantly, but if you practise each day, you will begin to see the effects. In the same way, you notice your body change when you go to the gym every day, your inner monologue will be the same with regular breathwork and Reiki.

If you want help in quieting your anxious mind then don’t hesitate to drop me a message and see how I can help.
