Why Therapy Doesn't Work

A comment I see thrown around on social media a lot is "therapy didn't work for me" or "this is why therapy didn't work for you". I find this comment fascinating and deeply telling.

As a trainee therapist, there are many reasons why I believe therapy doesn't work for some individuals. Firstly, you may simply have not found the right therapist. The therapist might practice a type of therapy that doesn't align with you. There are so many different things to think about when choosing your therapist. Often, there are terms thrown around that, unless you studied psychology, you probably don't understand. From Person-Centred to Psychodynamic, there are lots of therapeutic approaches to choose from, and it's not one size fits all.

Another reason therapy might not have worked for you is that it could be too confronting. Sometimes there are blind spots you're not ready to see or responsibilities you're not quite ready to accept. We live in a world where decisions are made for us, and therapy encourages a person to make their own choice. This can be challenging for a lot of people. There's no shame in any of this; everyone's journey is different. But this can put people off and leave them feeling vulnerable and simply not ready to continue.

For me, the reason why therapy doesn't work for so many is that there is no variety to the therapy a person might try. Recently, I met with an A&E consultant to discuss emotional health and how it affects our physical and mental health. He said something that is so true. Emotional health is a bit like nutrition. Eating only one type of food won't make you healthy, and having one type of therapy won't make you healthy either. Instead, you need a balanced therapeutic experience. A little bit of everything creates a healthy mind, body and soul.

This is something I believe down to my core. You're emotional health needs lots of therapeutic practices to stay strong. My business was built on an integrative approach. I like to draw on many different somatic modalities to bring a person back to themselves. For my psychotherapy training I am studying towards becoming an Integrative Transpersonal psychotherapist. This means I will draw upon many different schools of thought when working with a client. This is because I know every person is different and every person's needs are different.

In a 1-2-1 with a client, I use an integrative approach. Whether you book a Breathwork Journey, Reiki Treatment or Functional Breathing Session, I will still draw upon other modalities to help you. Whether you want help with your anxiety, releasing trauma and emotions, or learning how to breathe properly, the approach will be tailored to you.
